Trump Open to Talks After Fresh Tariff Attack: After sending new tariff letters to 12 countries, US President Donald Trump said he is sticking to the August 1 deadline for the new tariffs. But he’ll still talk and negotiate.
“I would say firm, but not 100% firm. If they call up and they say we'd like to do something a different way, we're going to be open to that,” Trump told reporters when asked if the deadline for the tariffs was firm.
Earlier the deadline was July 9, which was also the end of his 90 day pause. But he’s extending that deadline.
As per Leavitt, the President is set to "sign an executive order delaying the July 9th deadline to August 1st. So the reciprocal tariff rate or these new rates that will be provided in this correspondence to these foreign leaders will be going out the door within the next month, or deals will be made, and those countries continue to negotiate with the United States."

On Monday, Trump sent tariff letters to 14 countries and trade partners, including Japan, Indonesia, South Korea, and more, marking a new phase of his trade war.
In each of those letters, he’s warning of retaliatory measures if the country increases its tariff on the US.
"If for any reason you decide to raise your Tariffs, then, whatever the number you choose to raise them by will be added onto the tariffs that we charge," wrote Trump.
14 countries got Trump’s tariff letters saying the new tariffs will go into effect August 1.

In this round, Laos and Myanmar got a 40% tariff. Japan, South Korea, Tunisia, and Kazakhstan got 25% tariff.
Only 14 letters have been released so far. But according to White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt more will be released in the coming days.
Trump’s tariffs come after he announced new and higher tariff rates for all countries and US trade partners during his ‘Liberation Day’ exercise in April 2025.
Since then, countries have been working to get a trade deal with the US before Trump sets the numbers.
