DK Shivakumar Refutes Constitution Change Allegations, Calls BJP’s Claims Misleading

DK Shivakumar Refutes Constitution Change Allegations: Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar strongly denied the allegations leveled by the BJP, which sharply criticized him for his remarks on constitutional amendment. Shivakumar, a senior leader in Congress, directly accused the Bhartiya Janata Party of falsely misinterpreting his statement and maintained that he had never suggested amending the Constitution.

Speaking to the media, Shivakumar reiterated his statements, standing firm on his long political career. Congress is a national party and completely respects the Constitution and its very much vital spirit, he said. "I have been a legislator for 36 years and am well aware of my responsibilities. I possess basic common sense and would never propose altering the Constitution. My remarks have been taken out of context. I merely pointed out that several changes occur over time due to judicial rulings. Nowhere did I suggest that we intend to modify the Constitution," he clarified.

He stated that it appears that people have been misquoting him and that he is prepared to move a motion of privilege against them and is ready to take legal steps.

The BJP has not spared Shivakumar despite his clarifications. While speaking to the media, BJP MP Tejasvi Surya remarked that Congress was trying to float the agenda of the Jinnah Muslim League and also insult Dr. BR Ambedkar's name. "The Congress has consistently undermined Dr. Ambedkar’s contributions. Now, Karnataka's Deputy Chief Minister openly speaks about changes to the Constitution, revealing the party’s true intentions," Surya alleged.

Union Minister Kiren Rijiju also inserted his two bits in the matter, saying that Congress wants to bring constitutional amendments so that they can give reservations to Muslims. "Where are those who claim to protect the Constitution now? Congress is openly admitting that they want to change it for Muslim reservations," Rijiju remarked.

The controversy developed out of remarks made by DK Shivakumar at the News18 India Diamond States Summit 2025. In his reply to a question regarding Karnataka Transparency in Public Procurements (Amendment) Bill 2025, which provides a 4% reservation for Muslim contractors in public works, Shivakumar stated that the courts might be approached on the matter. When the anchor pointed out that reservations based on religion would not stand judicial scrutiny, he responded, "I agree. Let's wait and see how the courts rule on this. A good day will come. Over time, many things change, and so does the Constitution. Judicial decisions also shape constitutional interpretations."
