The media sources, including a news agency, reported citing Garg as saying that the firefighters found no cash while extinguishing flames at the judge's official residence.
When asked by IANS why his name was being used in the reports, Garg replied, "I don't know why," adding that he had already sent a clarification to the media carrying the statement. To clarify the inquiry made with him by IANS, Garg denied the claim and stated that he never told any media regarding firefighters reporting no cash found at the scene.
Fire department report as obtained by IANS stated that the fire broke out within household and stationary articles in a storeroom and no casualty was involved. Earlier, some media have reported that Garg said, "No cash was found by firefighters during their mission to extinguish fire at the residence of Delhi High Court Justice Yashwant Varma". The firefighting team did inform the police after the flames were brought under control on Thursday night.

The Supreme Court Collegium has initiated an inquiry into the entire incident because allegations arose about a huge stash of cash found in the house of Justice Varma during the fire scene on Thursday night.
Allegedly, the Collegium has also recommended that he be transferred to the Allahabad High Court. Denying all speculation, the Supreme Court clarified that the transfer of Justice Varma would not have any bearing from the alleged amounts found at his official residence. The transfer was hence a completely independent matter to the inquiry being conducted into the issue.
"There is misinformation and rumours being spread regarding the incident at the residence of Justice Yashwant Varma," the court said in a press note, totally disallowing the action of transfer from being at all related to the cash recovery.
