Delhi Govt Seeks Pause on Fuel Ban for End‑of‑Life Vehicles | Sirsa Writes to CAQM
Delhi environment minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa, told that people were not feeling good about the move.

Delhi Govt Seeks Pause on Fuel Ban for End‑of‑Life Vehicles: The environment minister of Delhi, Manjinder Singh Sirsa, has asked the Commission of Air Quality Management (CAQM) in Delhi to suspend its orders requiring a prohibition of fuel sales to end-of-life vehicles (ELVs) in the capital as reported by ANI on Thursday.
The government has indicated that fuel prohibition of overage vehicles (more than 10 years old of diesel-driven vehicles and more than 15 years of the gasoline-driven vehicles) cannot be applicable in the city because of the technological issues or challenges and complicated systems.

“We urge the Commission to put the implementation of Direction No. 89 on hold with immediate effect till the Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) system is seamlessly integrated across the entire NCR,” the minister said in the letter to CAQM, according to ANI.
"We are confident that the ongoing multi-pronged efforts of the Delhi Government will achieve substantial improvements in air quality," it added.
Speaking in a press conference, Sirsa also indicated that the populace felt unhappy about this action, and the government was on their side as reported PTI.
In April, the CAQM directed fuel stations to the effect that, no end-of-life cars were allowed to receive fuel as of July 1. Vehicles that were more than 10 years old and diesel vehicle and vehicles older than 15 years petrol were considered as end-of-life (EOL) vehicles. The ban applies on all ELVs, whether registered in Delhi or not.

As per the records, Delhi alone is having about 60.14 lakh deregistered vehicles of EoL and a large percentage of them are in active use. According to VAHAN database, the city has more than 62 lakh end of life vehicles with 41 lakh two wheelers and 18 lakh four wheelers.
The SOP of fuel ban was issued by the Delhi government last month. It required that petrol pumps keep a record, whether in paper or in computer, of all the fuel sales that were rejected to such vehicles.
It is recommended that petrol stations educate their employees in the matter of the CAQM regulation and compliance procedures to refuse fuel to the EoL vehicles.
