Delhi Cold Wave Alert: A cold wave continues to grip the national capital on Wednesday morning, with temperatures expected to drop to 5 degrees Celsius in the coming days.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD) seven-day forecast for Delhi, the minimum temperature will start dipping from Wednesday, and by Friday, it is expected to drop to 5 degrees Celsius.
The IMD’s seven-day forecast highlights that the temperature dip will begin on Wednesday. On the same day, the Safdarjung Observatory, Delhi’s primary weather station, recorded a maximum temperature of 16.2°C—2.8°C above normal.

"Minimum visibility of 150 metres in dense fog with northwesterly winds at 11-13 kmph was reported over Palam between 5 and 5:30 am, gradually improving to 700 metres in shallow fog with westerly winds at 13 kmph by 8:30 am," IMD said.
At Safdarjung, the minimum visibility was recorded at 500 metres, the IMD added.
The minimum temperature stood at 10.5°C, 3.6°C higher than the seasonal average. Relative humidity levels fluctuated between 87% and 92% throughout the day.
Dense fog and sky obscurity have elevated temperatures, preventing a drop in nighttime temperatures. Despite snowfall in the mountains, which typically causes a drop in plains temperatures, Delhi’s warmth is attributed to prolonged fog.

However, the forecast predicts a drop in minimum temperatures over the next few days, with rain expected between January 10-12, which will prevent a significant temperature dip in the region.
Delhi’s air quality sees Improvement, GRAP-3 restrictions lifted
Amid falling temperatures, Delhi’s air quality has shown signs of improvement. The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) reported that the Air Quality Index (AQI) lingered in the ‘inferior’ category last week.
Following improved wind speeds and favorable meteorological conditions, the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) revoked restrictions under Stage 3 of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) for Delhi-NCR on Sunday.
