Deepinder Goyal Responds to Outrage Over Zero Salary Job: Facing backlash for advertising a position which offered no salary, Zomato's chief executive officer Deepinder Goyal has once again shared an update on the recruitment of a chief of staff.
Taking to X, Goyal stated that more than 10,000 candidates have applied for the position. This comes after the CEO drew flak on X for announcing that he will recruit a Chief of Staff without a salary for the first year, who will instead pay ₹20 lakh to Zomato for its Feeding India initiative.

In this latest update, Goyal shared the different kinds of applicants who would now wish to fill the position. He said the candidates included those who have all the money, some who have some of the money, some who claim they don’t have the money, and those who actually don’t have the money.
The internet wasn’t happy after Goyal mentioned he wanted a Chief of Staff who was ‘grounded,’ who had ‘no sense of entitlement’ and who would be willing to effectively pay him for the chance to work with him. While it was pointed out that this candidate would receive the standard salary from the second year, he noted that the remuneration package would be decided after the first year. It was promised that this new salary would be more than ₹50 LPA.

Many found it implausible that the chief of one of the up-and-coming Indian startups would offer any job at his firm for a sum of ₹20 lakhs that they argued rationed out millions of Indians who did not have such an amount lying idle.
While some called it an 'uncompensated internship,' others condemned Goyal for normalizing such practices in the corporate world. “Asking 20L from little experience adds an artificial selection for rich kids with daddy's money. This means the candidate pool is of folks with high risk taking capacity but also possible that the candidate pool is of people quite distant from 'India',” one user wrote.
