Reports suggest that the surge in viral outbreaks is putting immense pressure on China’s healthcare system. However, despite the alarming videos circulating on platforms like X (formerly Twitter), there have been no official reports from the Chinese government or the World Health Organization (WHO) confirming a new pandemic or issuing emergency warnings.
One widely shared video shows a hospital waiting room filled with patients, many wearing masks, while others are seen coughing. Another post on X has gained significant attention, showing elderly individuals in a hospital corridor. The post claims that hospitals in China are overwhelmed due to the rise of “influenza A” and “HMPV,” comparing the situation to the Covid-19 surge from three years ago.
What Is HMPV?
Human metapneumovirus (HMPV) is a virus that typically causes cold-like symptoms, such as cough, fever, and a runny nose. While most people recover quickly, young children, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems are at higher risk of developing more severe complications, like pneumonia or bronchiolitis.
HMPV spreads mainly through respiratory droplets when an infected person coughs or sneezes, similar to how Covid-19 spreads. It can also be passed on by touching surfaces contaminated with the virus.

How to prevent HMPV?
Preventive measures for HMPV are similar to those for other respiratory illnesses. Here are a few things to keep in mind:
Wash hands regularly with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.
Avoid touching the face with unwashed hands.
Maintain distance from people showing signs of illness.
Clean frequently touched surfaces, such as doorknobs and toys.
Who is most at risk from HMPV?
According to CDC, HMPV poses a higher risk to certain groups, including:
Young children
Older adults
Individuals with weakened immune systems
