Chandra Grahan 2024: A lunar eclipse, also called Chandra Grahan in India, will be visible on September 18, 2024, and astronomy lovers will have much to look forward to this month. This will be the second lunar eclipse for the year.
However, as for this phenomena this celestial event is visible in several areas of the world despite the fact that in India, the Moon will be below the horizon during the eclipse. Therefore, the audience in India will not be able to watch the phenomena which are partially lunar eclipse. However, the event is of great religious and cultural value to many people in the country.

- Penumbral Eclipse Begins: 6:11 AM
- Partial Eclipse Begins: 7:42 AM
- Maximum Eclipse: 8:14 AM
- Partial Eclipse Ends: 8:45 AM
- Penumbral Eclipse Ends: 10:17 AM
When the Earth comes in-between the Moon and the Sun, the moon falls into the shadow, and this event is called lunar eclipse. The degree of alignment defines whether the eclipse is only partial or turns into the total eclipse.
The partial lunar eclipse is that type of eclipse in which only part of the Moon is submerged into the Earth’s shadow and is usually tinged a reddish color.
According to NASA in a partial lunar eclipse, “the dark region of the Earth’s shadow gradually becomes larger till it begins to fade out, but never envelops the moon fully.
LUNAR ECLIPSE DURATION
Actually, the period of a lunar eclipse may be short or long. A total lunar eclipse may take up to three hours and 40 minutes from the time its penumbral phase takes place up to the time the eclipse ends.
But, the totality the phase in which the Moon is entirely hidden from the Sun’s rays, is usually 30 mins to one hour and odd. Partial lunar eclipses, however, are known to take shorter time, depending on the portion of the Moon that is in the Earth’s shadow.
VISITABILITY IN INDIA
However, the Chandra Grahan will not be visible in India as it will appear below the horizon throughout the whole event. But, because of religious and cultural descriptions it nevertheless remains quite important.
RELIGIOUS AND ASTROLOGICAL SIGNIFICANCE
In the Hindu calendar moon is symbolized as female and eclipse is equal to the obscuring of the moon by the earth, therefore a lunar eclipse is seen as bad or unfavorable.
Even though the eclipse will not be visible here in India, like any other year traditional rituals and precautions will be observed. This Chandra Grahan falls on the occasion of Bhadrapada Purnima and the first Shraddh of Pitru Paksha, hence making it holier.
