Bypoll Election Results 2024: The bypolls held along with the assembly elections saw big wins and surprises. From Priyanka Gandhi’s first win in Wayanad to BJP’s dominance in UP and Gujarat, the results give us a glimpse into the state of the states. Here’s the full winners list and key highlights from the bypolls that took place recently.
Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi won her first election on Saturday by winning the Wayanad Lok Sabha seat in Kerala. She led by over 4.1 lakh votes against CPI(M) led LDF’s Sathyan Mokeri as per EC figures.
Priyanka got 6,22,338 votes which was slightly less than her brother Rahul Gandhi’s 6,47,445 votes in the April Lok Sabha elections. Despite the lower voter turnout for the bypoll, Priyanka’s margin of victory 4,10,931 was more than Rahul’s 3,64,422.

In UP, BJP won big in the bypolls. Chief minister Yogi Adityanath attributed the win to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and said the results show the decline of SP-INDIA bloc’s “politics of loot and lies”.
BJP won 7 of the 9 assembly seats that went to polls, including Ghaziabad, Khair and Phulpur while SP won Sishamau and Karhal.
BJP won 5 of the 7 assembly seats in Rajasthan bypolls. Key wins were Rajendra Bhamboo in Jhunjhunu, Rajendra Gurjar in Deoli-Uniara and Shanta Amrit Lal Meena in Salumbar. Congress won Dausa and Bharat Adivasi Party (BAP) won Chorasi. This shows BJP’s continued strength in the state despite local challenges.
In Punjab, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) made big gains in the bypolls winning Gidderbaha, Dera Baba Nanak and Chabbewal Assembly seats. But Congress held on to Barnala seat, a big win considering AAP’s gains. BJP which is struggling in Punjab didn’t win any seat and came third in all 4 seats.
In Gujarat, BJP won Vav assembly seat from Congress in a close bypoll. BJP’s Swarupji Thakor won by 2,442 votes over Congress’s Gulabsinh Rajput. Thakor surged ahead in the last rounds of counting showing BJP’s continued dominance in the state.

In Bihar, NDA won big in the bypolls winning 4 assembly seats. NDA retained Imamganj and won Tarari, Ramgarh and Belaganj from the opposition INDIA bloc. Notable was the poor show of Jan Suraaj, a new party led by Prashant Kishor, which didn’t win even a single seat.
In West Bengal’s by-elections, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) has come out victorious, winning five out of the six contested seats and also winning the Madarihat seat from the BJP in a seat previously occupied by them. Six constituencies Naihati, Haroa, Medinipur, Taldangra, Sitai (SC), and Madarihat (ST) were the center of by-polls after the MLAs vacated their seats due to their success in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. This outcome serves to reinforce the TMC's already formidable political presence in the state of West Bengal.
