BSF Constable Fatally Shot by Colleague During Quarrel in Murshidabad, West Bengal

A 55-year-old constable of the Border Security Force (BSF) was shot dead by a 29-year-old colleague during a quarrel late Saturday night at Samserganj in Murshidabad district of West Bengal. The police said the accused was arrested.

The deceased, Ratan Lal Singh, was a resident of Rajasthan. He was declared dead on arrival at the Jangipur sub-divisional hospital and was shifted there after the doctors at the local hospital were unable to stop the bleeding.

The police said the accused, Shivam Kumar Mishra of Chhattisgarh, fired 13 rounds from his service rifle. Several bullets hit Singh in the abdomen area.

The BSF informed the police and Mishra was detained at the Samserganj police station in the early hours of Sunday morning. "The accused and the deceased were on duty when the incident took place. Other information will be furnished by the Samserganj police station," said N.K. Pandey, a spokesperson of the BSF's South Bengal Frontier, refusing to comment further about the incident.

From available information, the police said that Mishra, who has been with the BSF for four years, was working under Singh. “BSF personnel from the 119th battalion were patrolling the Paharghati area. Investigation shows that Singh and Mishra had a quarrel over the latter being refused leave to visit his pregnant wife. Mishra flicked the burst mode lever of his rifle and opened fire,” an officer from the Jangipur police division said.

On the basis of a complaint registered by the BSF authorities against Mishra, an FIR was registered for murdering the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). “Mishra was produced before the Jangipur court on Sunday and remanded in judicial custody,” the officer said.

Samserganj is included in the Jangipur police division, where violence broke out in April during protests against the newly enforced Waqf (Amendment) Act. The BSF's 119th battalion and other central paramilitary forces were deployed following the violence when three people died, and are still monitoring parts of Jangipur as ordered by the Calcutta high court.
