‘Bones Kept for Rituals’: Kerala Live‑in Couple Arrested After Two Newborn Deaths
The case came to light after the male partner arrived at a police station in Thrissur with a bag claiming it contained the skeletal remains of two newborns.

‘Bones Kept for Rituals’: Kerala Police, on Sunday, arrested a couple who were staying together and were unmarried after reporting that couple as suspects in killing their two newborn babies.
The case emerged when a male partner aged 25 years named Bavin strolled into the Pudukad police in Thrissur with a bag and asserted that it carried the skeletal remains of two newborns, according to news agency PTI. Police also added that Bavin arrived in the police station at 12.30 am drunk.

Subsequently Kerala police decided to investigate the matter and they detained Bavin and his companion, 23-year-old Aneesha, a lab technician. The bones were perused by forensic surgeons and prima facie, it was confirmed that these were those of newborns, Thrissur Rural SP B Krishna Kumar told The Indian Express.
Kumar further said that during the investigation remains would be thoroughly scrutinized. The accused couple is suspected to have met on social media and betrothed each other in 2020.
Although Bavin had kept quiet concerning the deaths up to this time, the fact that his relationship with Aneesha got sour and he found her to be the one undertaking an affair prompted him to report the events to the police.
The remains were buried nearby so that some rituals could be done by woman according to police.
As he handed the bag to the police, Bavin said, in it, they had placed the bones to do rituals so that the soul of the infants could reach moksha, according to Thrissur Rural SP Kumar.
According to the police, the first child was born in November 2021. The woman informed the police that the first child died naturally because the umbilical cord was tied to its neck during delivery in the preliminary inquest as reported by PTI.
Nevertheless, Aneesha said later when confessing that the new born was suffocated after birth and the body was hidden in a vacant plot around the house that the couple resided.
Eight months later, the woman dug up the pit and gave the skeletal remains to Bavin, the police reportedly told The Indian Express.
Aneesha also told police she killed a second baby for which she gave birth in August 2024. The newborn was disposed of the same way, but at a different location, police said.
The police are investigating whether the woman's family knew anything about the pregnancies and births.
