Bibek Debroy, Renowned Economist and PM’s Economic Advisory Council Chairman, Passes Away at 69

Bibek Debroy Passes Away at 69: Bibek Debroy, Chairman of Prime Minister’s economic advisory council (EAC-PM) and a top economist passed away this morning, he was 69. He was awarded Padma Shri in September. He had resigned as Chancellor of Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economics (GIPE) in Pune after Bombay High Court gave interim relief to Vice-Chancellor Ajit Ranade who was removed from his post earlier.
He was admitted to AIIMS. PM Narendra Modi condoled his passing.

Reacting to the news, PM Narendra Modi said, “Dr. Bibek Debroy Ji was a towering scholar, well-versed in diverse domains like economics, history, culture, politics, spirituality and more. Through his works, he left an indelible mark on India’s intellectual landscape. Beyond his contributions to public policy, he enjoyed working on our ancient texts, making them accessible to the youth.”
Expressing grief EAM Jaishankar said, “Deeply grieved at the passing away of Dr. Bibek Debroy.His contributions to governance and policy making were enormous. Equally, his exceptional talents were harnessed to make our culture, history and traditions accessible to many generations.”
“Remembering a dedicated reformer, great nationalist, an erudite scholar and a wonderful friend. Om Shanti,” he added.
He also posted a picture with Bibek Debroy. Bibek Debroy was educated in Ramakrishna Mission School, Narendrapur; Presidency College, Kolkata; Delhi School of Economics; and Trinity College, Cambridge.

He worked in Presidency College, Kolkata; Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economics, Pune; Indian Institute of Foreign Trade, Delhi; and as director of a ministry of finance/UNDP project on legal reforms.
Bibek Debroy was an Indian economist, author and scholar known for his work on economic policy and Sanskrit texts. He had a big role in shaping India’s economic policies.
He has expertise in macroeconomics, public finance and infrastructure. He has written on economic reforms, governance and Indian railways.
He was also known for his work on translating classical Sanskrit texts like Mahabharata and Bhagavad Gita.
He was a member of NITI Aayog till June 5, 2019. He was also a consulting/contributing editor with several newspapers.
