Bengaluru Stampede: Karnataka Govt Blames RCB, Cites Virat Kohli Video Before Victory Parade

Bengaluru Stampede: It is seen that the Karnataka government has pointed the IPL 2025 champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) at the centre of the stampede that happened outside the M Chinnaswamy cricket stadium when they were celebrating their win.

Karnataka government filed its report with Karnataka high court that the event organiser,DNA Entertainment Networks Private Limited, had not taken prior permission to hold the victory parade as it had only informed the police about its planned victory parade on June 3.

The Stampede in June 4 had led to the death of 11 fans of RCB coupled with several others who had been injured as the crowd had come out in great numbers to witness the victory parade of RCB.

The Karnataka government made the report to Karnataka high court with references to a chain of laxities of RCB and event organisers.

As an India Today report indicates, the government also threw the spotlight on a Virat Kohli video that requested fans to turn up at the event, even though the city police refused to grant permission.

The submission further explained that the organiser of the event, DNA Entertainment Networks Private Limited had only notified police on June 3 that a victory parade was in the offing, yet a formal clearance is necessary as per an order issued by the city in 2009. Such an event was not allowed by the police.

Nevertheless, the report further reports that RCB proceeded with organising the event, with the organisation inviting people, in advertisements on social media, and on the Virat Kohli video, to come and watch the event on June 4, with no entry fee. The government attributed the cause of stampede to the video message which caused larger turn out.

What was the incident of Bengaluru stampede?

This confusion was heightened by June 4 where the event took place. It was some time after 3.14 PM when the organisers declared that passes were to be shown to enter into the M Chinnaswamy Stadium. The sudden change to open admission policy caused a panic situation to the fans on the streets of the city at the end minute.

It was also the lack of coordination between the RCB, DNA and Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) as also blamed in the report. The stampede went on after bad planning at the gates of entry and failure in opening the gates on time as indicated in the report. The event resulted in seven injured police men.

A downsized version of the event, the report said, was hence permitted by the police.

The response of the state government also explains what happened after the incident, namely magisterial and judicial inquiries, the registration of First Information Reports (FIRs), the discipline hassling of the police officers, the suspension of the political secretary of the Chief Minister and the transfer of the state intelligence head. Those affected also have been announced to be compensated.
