Arvind Kejriwal Hearing: In a courtroom drama that unfolded today before the Supreme Court bench of Justices Sanjiv Khanna and Dipankar Datta, contrasting interpretations emerged from the lawyers of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on what exactly went down at the end of the day's hearing.

Earlier in the day, Justices Sanjiv Khanna and Dipankar Datta noted that interim relief to Mr. Kejriwal could have a "cascading effect" if he discharges any official duties.

Lok Sabha elections are held every five years, so the situation was "extraordinary," according to the judges.

"When granting interim bail, we examine whether there will be any misuse or if the person is a hardened criminal. That is not the case here," Justice Khanna said.

Enforcement Directorate (ED) said such a relief would send a "wrong message" to the common man and accordingly advised the Court not to make exceptions just for politicians.

The agency also noted that the Delhi CM had evaded its summons nine times in the Delhi excise policy case.

Delhi High Court ruled on April 9 that his arrest by the ED was not illegal, dealing a major blow to the Chief Minister.

It found that the evidence was adequate, including statements from approvers, involvement of middlemen, and references that cash had been handed over for election expenses in 2022.

The Additional Standing Counsel for the Aam Aadmi Party government before the Supreme Court, Rishikesh Kumar, posted on his social media account that the hearing in the case had ended and that the judgment date would be announced soon.

The same was confirmed by Arvind Kejriwal's lawyer Shahdan Farasat.

On Tuesday, over 1,000 people logged in virtually for the hearing on Arvind Kejriwal's interim bail.

He is currently incarcerated in the Tihar jail on his sixth stretch of remand until May 20 after being arrested on March 21, barely a day after the Model Code of Conduct for the general election was announced on March 16.
