Army Chief Mocks Islamabad’s Victory Claim After Op Sindoor: ‘If You Ask A Pakistani…’

‘If You Ask A Pakistani…’: Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi on Saturday took a dig at Pakistan over its claim of victory after the four day long conflict that started on May 7 with the launch of Operation Sindoor.
Dwivedi was referring to the narrative building after the conflict, when Islamabad promoted its Army Chief Asim Munir to five star general and field marshal despite the military setbacks against India.
Taking aim at Pakistan’s post-conflict rhetoric, Dwivedi said, “If you ask a Pakistani whether you lost or won, he’d say, ‘My chief has become a field marshal. We must have won, that’s why he’s become a field marshal.’” The audience laughed but it highlighted the huge gap between the battlefield and the political spin.
Dwivedi also praised the government for giving the armed forces complete operational freedom during the four day long campaign. Referring to the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam that killed 26 people, he said, “On the 23rd, the next day itself, we all sat down… For the first time, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said, ‘Enough is enough.’” He stressed that the clarity and confidence from the political leadership had boosted the morale of commanders in the field.

On naming the operation as Operation Sindoor, General Dwivedi said it was something that united the nation.
"It is important that how a small name Op Sindoor connects the whole nation... That is something which galvanised the whole nation... That is the reason the whole nation was saying why have you stopped? That question was being asked and it has been amply answered," he added.
Operation Sindoor was the targeted military operation launched by India, where precision
strikes were carried out against terrorist infrastructure and camps in Pakistan and Pakistan occupied Kashmir. Indian armed forces, with a free hand from the government, used air and missile strikes to hit nine specific targets.

While India said the strikes were focused, measured and non-escalatory, Pakistan responded with retaliatory drone and missile attacks which were neutralised by India’s air defence systems.
The operation is considered a victory for India, both militarily and psychologically. Analysts say the operation showed India’s capability of high precision, coordinated military action which dismantled terrorist infrastructure and restored deterrence against state sponsored cross border terrorism.
