Instagram User Links Walmart Clothing Price Hike to Trump’s Tariffs | Video

A video posted on Instagram by one of the users in a Walmart store in the US, blamed the tariffs by the US President Donald Trump which were implemented on 1 August, as the direct cause of the discernible price rise in clothing and other everyday commodities.

The video was uploaded by the user, on 1 August, Mercedes Chandler who recorded over 527,000 followers shared the video and it has since become a viral sensation within the platform.

This is the impact of tariffs of Donald Trump. Chandler proceeds to display an outfit of a child that was priced at $6.98 and is now selling at $10.98, and a backpack that was initially priced at 19.97 now going at 24.97.

“Guys, the tariffs are in active effect," Chandler says. “Look at these clothes in Walmart. All the tags have these bottom pieces ripped off, but then you find one with the bottom still on — $10.98. The price is raised to $11.98."

Says Chandler, seeing the items: That is 4 dollars more; a lot of the price tags are now covered with stickers to obscure the original price.

“If you don’t believe me, go to your local—whether it be Walmart or Target — and check this out for yourself," Chandler says in the video.

The post has elicited a flood of response on the site. One user commented: “Well MAGA… are you winning yet?" Another added sarcastically, “Wasn’t China supposed to pay those tariffs?"

A Target employee also chimed in, “We also are taking the perforated price tags off the clothing starting a few days ago."

“I am not getting they are imposing high tarrif on china and india but their price increased. Can some one explain me?," another confused user asked.

President Donald Trump has reinstated or extended tariffs on a large swath of imports as an aspect of his latest economic policy. The aim of Trump is to save American jobs, promote domestic production, and diminish the US trade balance.

The argument presented by Trump is that the tariffs increase the prices of external goods and acts as a motivation to purchase domestic goods. Nevertheless, in reality, numerous retailers including such giants as Walmart and Target tend to transfer the additional expenses to retail markets, which means that they charge more at Word Street shelves.

The usefulness of tariffs has been a debate among economists. Whereas the Trump administration believes they serve the national interests and support development, the opposition states that they cause inflation, the break in the supply chains and increase expenses of American families.
