Tibet Earthquake: Death Toll Rises to 126, Nearly 200 Injured – Key Highlights

Tibet Earthquake: The latest report from the Chinese agency Xinhua-quoting AFP—now puts the figure up to 126, which are dead following the Tuesday 6.8 magnitude earthquake that rocked Tibet. "It injured around 200 people; houses were destroyed in several places, streets with rubble".

According to AP, more than 1,000 houses were damaged in the sparse and underpopulated area. In a video put up by the broadcaster, debris of buildings littered streets and saw crushed automobiles.

1. "Earthquake measuring 4.3 jolted Tibet on Tuesday evening," according to National Centre of Seismology (Ncs). The earthquake hit the region at 5:52 pm (IST), the NCS noted. According to National Centre of Seismology, the earthquake occurred at a depth of 16km.

2. AP reported that Chinese President Xi Jinping called for rescue to be hastened all out, to put a limit to casualties, and rehabilitate those who have lost homes. More than 3,000 rescuers were deployed, CCTV said.

3. As heard from an AP report, rescue workers were attempting to reach survivors in mounds of broken brick, some getting help from ladders, in severely damaged villages. Videos posted by the Ministry of Emergency Management in China showed workers carrying two persons in stretchers along debris from collapsed houses.

4. Tibet : This is an earthquake-prone area. More than a hundred earthquakes of at least 3.0 on the Richter scale have been recorded in the region last year. But quakes are scarce, as those of a magnitude 7.0 and above have been recorded only nine times since the start of the 20th century, Reuters accounts.

Some 22,000 disaster relief supplies including cotton tents, cotton coats, quilts and folding beds along with separate relief materials meant for high altitude and cold areas have been dispatched by central authorities to the affected quake area, as per PTI. Besides, more than 1,500 local firefighters and rescuers have also been sent in ground deployment.

6. In Nepal, the earthquake forced people to come out of their homes. It was felt in Kavrepalanchwok, Sindhupalanchok Dhading and Solukhumbu districts as well. As per a report by PTI, many in Kathmandu ran out of their houses in panic. People witnessed buildings, trees, and electric wires shaking for some time on the streets.

7. AP news reported that about 150 aftershocks were felt in the nine hours after the quake, and the Mount Everest scenic area on the Chinese side was closed.

8. On the southwest fringe of Kathmandu, water was spilling out into the street from a pond in a little courtyard with a temple, as shown in a video capturing the day of the disaster. “It is a big earthquake,” AP quoted a woman as saying, “People are all shaking."

9. About 6900 people live in three townships and 27 villages within a radius of 20 km (12.5 miles) from the epicenter on the Chinese side, as state media reported. The average altitude in the area is about 4200 meters (13800 feet), said the Chinese earthquake center.

10. The impact of the earthquake was felt all over what is commonly known as the Shigatse region in Tibet, according to a Reuters report. Shigatse, which has a population of around 800,000 people, is administered by the city of Shigatse, the traditional seat of the Panchen Lama, arguably the most important figure in Tibetan Buddhism. Many homes in the city of Shigatse have been reduced to rubble, according to video released by Tibet Fir and Rescue showed.
