Tension between India and Pakistan
The tension escalated between India and Pakistan after the Pahalgam terror attack that killed 26 people, including 25 Indians and one Nepali national, who is believed to have been carried out by mercenaries from across the border.
The next day, Prime Minister Modi held a Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) meeting, giving the members a detailed briefing on the Pahalgam terrorist attack.
The CCS condemned the attack in the strongest possible words and expressed grief over the deaths of the victims and wishes for the speedy recovery of those injured.
The CCS briefing also highlighted cross-border linkages of the terrorist attack. It was commented that this attack is part of a strategy to undermine the security situation in the Union Territory, which has been progressing reasonably well in the conduct of elections, and has now taken off for economic development.
The government categorically stated that the perpetrators of this heinous act and the masterminds behind it should face the sternest possible punishment.
The government announced several steps to send a powerful message to Pakistan for supporting cross-border terrorism: putting the Indus Water Treaty on hold, shutting down the Attari post, cancelling visas to Pakistani nationals and reducing staff at the Pakistan High Commission in New Delhi.
Since that time, there has been a continuous violation by Pakistan of the ceasefire along the Line of Control and international borders in Jammu and Kashmir against India, with the Indian forces sufficing an appropriate response each time.
