History
Laborers in America demonstrated in 1886, demanding eight hours of work per day.
Soon, however, the demonstration went out of hand and several people were injured in Chicago.
Known as The Haymarket Affair, this incident marked the start of International Labour Day.
In 1889, the Chicago protests inspired a meeting in Paris to commemorate May Day annually.
In 1891, the International 2nd Congress acknowledged May Day as an annual event as a result of Raymond Lavigne's proposal for international demonstrations to commemorate the Haymarket events.
In 1923, the first May Day celebrations were organized in Chennai by the Labour Kisan Party of Hindustan, led by Comrade Singaravelar, who arranged two important meetings.

Significance
On International Labour Day, we recognize the contributions of workers and the working class to society and the country.
In addition, it encourages workers to learn about their rights so they can protect themselves from exploitation.
Additionally, it encourages people to work together to improve the working and living conditions of workers.

- Despite its origins in the Haymarket affair in Chicago, International Labour Day is celebrated in Canada and the USA on the first Monday in September, not May 1.
- More than 80 countries celebrate May Day.
- In 1923, The Labour Kisan Party Of Hindustan celebrated the first May Day in Chennai (then Madras).
- Maharashtra Day and Gujarat Day are also celebrated on May 1.
- Labor Day was first celebrated in Canada in 1872, 10 years before it was celebrated in the United States.
