The festival is celebrated to seek blessings from Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati for a successful married life, as well as the health of their families. It is observed by strict fasting and several rituals.

Hartalika Teej 2024 First DaySecond Date and Timing
This festival is celebrated on the third day of the growing Moon of Bhadrapada Shukla (bright-half) and therefore, it was named as Hartalika. On 6 September at Tritiya Tithi begins and ends in the afternoon exact on 3:01 PM inclusive of Pratipada. The morning Pooja Muhurat is: 06:03AM to08 :34 AM (September 6) This is the right time to do Shubh Sandhyakaal Puja at 6:36 PM in Pradosh Kaal.
Hartalika Teej fasting Rules
The fasting of Hartalika Teej is very rigorous and women do not consume food or water from sunrise (earlier than the dawn on Pratahkal) to moonrise even. So here are those basic rules you have to follow up this fast.
Preparation Eat Simple Satvik food or pure vegetarian meal one day before the fasting and make preparations for Teej Puja. FINISH ALL OF YOUR PREP WORK FOR THE NEXT DAYS RITUALS Preparation.

Eat Sargi in the morning (around 4:30 AM to 5:16AM), the meal consists mostly of fruits and some sweets so as to get all the energy needed for the fast. Following this time, the fast will begin at 6:02 a.m.
Fasting- The women fasting do not eat or drink anything the whole day. People who have health-related problems like pregnancy or illness in the family, can break their fast after Puja with fruits and juices.
Breaking the Fast: The fast is broken when eating soaked black gram and cucumber on Chaturthi days at sunrise. Then an extravagant meal is made for the whole family.
Rituals for Hartalika Teej
- Puja: Clay idols or pictures of Lord Shiva, Goddess Parvati and Lord Ganesha are used for performing the Teej Puja. The idols should be kept after the noon, and Puja is performed during Pradosh Kaal which starts from sunset.
- Solah (sixteen) Shringar: Women wear new clothes and 16 traditional ornaments, solah shringar. Married women have different types of symbols created by sindoor, mangalsutra, bangles and other loving appeals. They are also presented to Goddess Parvati in the Puja.
- Pooja Items: Red saree, bangles or items depicting she is married; offering to Goddess Parvati. Hartalika Teej Vrat is women's fast in which they worship Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati and recite the story of Hartalika teej.
- After The Puja: New Saree and prasad are offered to mother-in-law by women who then gets blessing from her after comenting “Suvo bijoya” Ladies who are fasting for an ideal life partner- need to get blessed by both, Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati.
Hartalika Teej Do’s and Don’ts
- Nahay Khay: This refers to a day before your fast, taking sankalp for the vrat and then bathing (hair wash is recommended) wearing fresh clothes. Eat food only after Puja.
- Stay Away from Other Foods: Do not eat baingan, masoor dal and other prohibited foods while fasting
- Best Puja Time: In the morning, but if you cannot in the evening Pradosh Kaal is also suitable. Performing the Puja in a group is advised.
- Deities Statues: Sand Idols made up using sand for Puja — Lord Shiva, Goddess Parvati & Lord Ganesha. And if having an idol is not practical, we may use images of those deities instead.
