Earlier, Jay Shah, the BCCI secretary revealed that the next head coach will be assigned from the upcoming Sri Lanka tour.
Jay Shah told in a press conference, “Both coach and selector appointments will be made shortly. CAC has interviewed and shortlisted two names and after reaching Mumbai whatever they have decided we will go by that. VVS Laxman is going to Zimbabwe but a new coach will join from the Sri Lanka series.”
However, as per the media reports, the next head coach will be Gautam Gambhir who will take charge of the India Cricket team for 3 years from the upcoming ODI series against Sri Lanka.
News18 reported that Rahul Dravid's retirement was extended after India's loss against Australia at the ODI World Cup final.

However, before the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will announce the next head coach, Gautam Gambhir said farewell from Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) as their coach on Friday.
Gautam Gambhir's efforts and captaincy led KKR to win two Indian Premier League trophies.
On Friday, Gautam Gambhir visited Eden Garden to say farewell to the KKR team, he also shot a video that emphasizes the journey of Gautam Gambhir as the coach of KKR.
The Cricket Association of Bengal said, “It was a low-key affair, but Gambhir wanted to bid goodbye to his fans with a message and that is why they shot a video at the Eden.”

Gambhir has a strong bond with both KKR and Eden Gardens. In 2012 and 2014, he was the first leader to lead the team to back-to-back IPL titles, and then as a mentor in 2024 supported the KKR team to win the third IPL trophy.
