However, sometimes the method of starting the Shawwal may differ, while a country may rely on the actual physical sighting of the moon; some countries may do so with the help of astronomical calendars, and the differences may cause the Eid date to differ slightly in some areas.
The Islamic calendar is unlike the popularly followed Gregorian calendar in the West, in that it is lunar based. Thus, Ramadan and Eid-ul-Fitr would shift approximately 10-11 days per year, with lunar months being shorter in length than solar months. In this way, the sighting of the crescent moon varies from place to place, and thus the excitement of Eid is an annual thrill among Muslims worldwide.
Muslims spend a total of 720 hours, equivalent to four weeks and two days, of Ramadan fasting from dawn to sunset. This is time for an exploration of the spiritual depths by acts of charity (zakaat) as well as an exploration of humanitarian action such as feeding the poor.
The end of Ramadan comes with the Laylatul Qadr, i.e. the Night of Power, a holy night believed to be the night when the Quran was for the first time revealed to Prophet Muhammad. It will occur on the 21st, 23rd, 25th, 27th, or 29th night of Ramadan. Most importantly, this is a time of intenseness in prayers and devotion preparing for Eid-ul-Fitr.
Eid-ul-Fitr literally means a feast at the breaking of a fast. It has all the marks of a joyous occasion, bringing families together for feasting on sumptuous platters, donning fine clothes, exchanging gifts, and congregational prayers. The day starts with a special Eid prayer in mosques or wide open fields and then progresses into an entire day of merriment with feasting and acts of kindness.
The moon sighting would continue to be a pertinent symbol of unity, faith, and culture across cultures, as the world prepares to welcome Eid 2025. Two observers, one with a telescope, the other with his naked eyes, while waiting for the sight of the crescent moon, will discover that the ''moon'' is not simply a sign of the end of fasting but also a harbinger of festivities filled with love and gratitude.
