Myanmar Earthquake: PM Modi Speaks to Junta Chief as Death Toll Crosses 1,000

Myanmar Earthquake: The earthquake which had a magnitude of 7.7 with aftershocks killed at least 1,000 people, injuring 1,600 others in Myanmar on Friday, according to the authorities, AFP reported. Buildings fell, and the infrastructure across a wide area was wrecked, including a skyscraper under construction in Thailand.

With nothing but their bare hands, rescuers have been working tirelessly through the rubble, desperately searching for survivors in Mandalay.

Much of the devastation lay in Mandalay, Myanmar's second-largest city, located near the epicenter of the 7.7 magnitude quake, which was accompanied by a strong aftershock and several moderate quakes.

In addition to claiming lives, the earthquake brought down numerous buildings, bridges, and a monastery.

In light of the damage from the quake, the country declared a state of emergency in six of the hardest-hit areas, wherein injured men and women had to receive treatment outside one of the major hospitals in the capital, Naypyidaw.

The Myanmar government further stated blood was in high demand in a few areas subjected to maximum destruction.

Similarly, the junta government has requested international assistance following the earthquake. To initiate the relief actions, the UN allocated USD 5 million.

On X, PM Modi said, "Spoke with Senior General H.E. Min Aung Hlaing of Myanmar. Conveyed our deep condolences at the loss of lives in the devastating earthquake. As a close friend and neighbour, India stands in solidarity with the people of Myanmar in this difficult hour."

He further mentioned that disaster relief material, humanitarian assistance, and search and rescue teams are being sent to the areas affected under 'Operation Brahma.'
