BJP and Congress spar over 'love jihad' charges following the murder of a Karnataka Congress corporator's daughter.
While college authorities and students attempted to rush Neha to the Karnataka Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS) Hospital, she was pronounced dead.
Neha died from multiple stab wounds inflicted by Fayaz, who was later arrested and is being held in judicial custody for 14 days.
In the first year of her Masters of Computer Applications (MCA) program at BVB College (KLE Technological University), Neha, a 23-year-old daughter of Congress Corporator Niranjan Hiremath, was enrolled, reports said.
As she returned from her first semester MCA exams at 4:30 pm, the incident occurred.

Fayaz and Neha were friends and classmates during their BCA studies, but their friendship was opposed by the college administration and Neha's parents. The stabbing incident is suspected to have been the result of a strained relationship between Neha and Fayaz. Neha's parents even prohibited her from attending college because of this problem.
Geetha, Neha's mother, expressed her shock, saying, "I came to pick her up and spoke to her once on the phone. Within five minutes of our conversation, chaos erupted, and someone mentioned she had been stabbed. I haven't seen her face yet. I still believe my daughter is alive. I can't believe she is gone."
Niranjan Hiremath, the victim's father, said Fayaz was known to the family, and they even dissuaded him from pursuing Neha.
"He was an old student, and he had proposed to my daughter, but she rejected his proposal," Hiremath said. She did not like him, and she usually stayed away from all this... She refused his proposal, saying they both belonged to different castes and that she did not wish to have any relationship with him. Out of anger, he stabbed my daughter."
He further added, "The motive of the murder is that the victim rejected the accused's love proposal... We had a conversation with the accused before the incident took place where we explained to him that we are Hindu and you are Muslim, so we cannot allow you to get married."
As part of its attack on Congress, the BJP has claimed the murder of a girl by a man who refused advances was a 'love jihad' by the government.
According to the Karnataka government, the incident was not a case of love jihad, but rather a mutual relationship. According to DK Shivakumar, the BJP was creating fear and panic by portraying the state as lacking law and order, but the law will take its course.
Thousands of students participated in the demonstrations, blocking roads and calling for a college bandh in Hubballi, following the campus murder.
ABVP, the student wing of the BJP, demanded justice for Neha's death. Siddaramaiah assured the public of a thorough investigation, appealing for calm.
