R Madhavan Recalls Filming 3 Idiots at 40: ‘We Looked Younger Than Real College Kids’
R Madhavan recalls that he was 40 when he played a college student in 3 Idiots and expressed being a little hesitant going into project. Now he feels younger than the actual students.
R Madhavan Recalls Filming 3 Idiots at 40: Actor R Madhavan, who is posing of success of Kesari: Chapter 2, has disclosed how he felt playing a college kid in the blockbuster 3 Idiots, in which he also shared the dais with stars Aamir Khan and Sharman Joshi. "I did feel a little awkward playing this young college student when at the time I started shooting the film, I was 40. But it became easier for me when I saw that the only student actors are in their teens or early twenties," the actor shared.

‘It was a miracle that we passed off as college students’
In an interview with News 18, the Rehna Hai Tere Dil Mein actor said, “I was sh**ting bricks when I was doing 3 Idiots as I was 40 years old at that time. Oh my god! It’s a miracle that we passed off as college students."
Madhavan further added, “But the funny part was when we went to the college and got into our attires, we were looking younger than the actual students there. That’s what gave us the confidence. Thankfully, Aamir (Khan), Sharman (Joshi) and I weren’t bald. Guys studying in that college were bald or had grey hair. We had to ask them if they’re students or professors. When they said that they’re students, we were like, ‘Achchi baat hai, bhai! (Thank goodness) Now we feel much younger.’"

3 Idiots, directed by Rajkumar Hirani, showcased three actors as their character's engineering college students. At the time of filming, Aamir was 44 years old, Madhavan was 39 years, and Sharman was 30 years. Hence, all three of the actors were of considerable age to their character's age. 3 Idiots, which also starred Boman Irani, Kareena Kapoor, and others, is the top Hindi blockbuster. It is the first Hindi film to earn ₹400 crore, worldwide.
R Madhavan's future projects
Madhavan will star in Karan Johar's Aap Jaisa Koi, which is the second film he is doing with Karan Johar (after Kesari: Chapter 2). Madhavan returns to a romantic role with Fatima Sana Shaikh in the lead role. Interestingly enough, Madhavan's character is a Sanskrit teacher, age 48 years, while Fatima's character is age 28, and is a French teacher. Directed by Vivek Soni, Aap Jaisa Koi still does not have a release date but is confirm for Netflix. Madhavan is also filming, De De Pyaar De 2 starring Ajay Devgn and Rakul Preet Singh. Anshul Sharma is directing the sequel, and it is set to come to theatres on November 14th this year.
