Aamir Khan Hints at Retirement: The Story Behind Backing ‘Laapataa Ladies’

The actor-producer Amir Khan opened up about his future plans.

Aamir Khan Hints at Retirement: On Friday, the screening of the movie Laapataa Ladies took place at the Supreme Court which was part of a gender sensitisation program, and several judges from the apex court took part in it.

The actor-producer Amir Khan and his filmmaker Kiran Rao had a conversation with the Chief Justice of India D.Y. Chandrachud after the screening, and he opened up about his future plans.

In between the conversation, Aamir revealed that his decision to produce Laapataa Ladies stemmed from both “fear and desire.” About his career, the actor-producer said, “During COVID, at the age of 56, I realised this is the last leg of my career.”

“I might have 15 more years of active work left, and I wanted to give back. The industry, society, and country have given me so much. I thought I could do one film a year, but as a producer, I can back multiple stories that I feel strongly about.”

“Through producing, I can provide a platform for new writers, directors, and everyone involved in the process. Laapataa Ladies is the first step in that direction. I want to promote this kind of talent and hope to produce four to five films a year so that we can see more such movies,” he explained.

Chief Justice Chandrachud asked them about the purpose and inspiration of producing the film Laapataa LadiesKiran Rao replied that it all began with Biplab Goswami's original script. During the Screen Writers Association competition in 2020, Amir Khan found the script and bought the rights. “We infused more humour into the dramatic narrative,” Kiran said, also adding that making the film was long because of the changes in the industry.

“The film has received a lot of love from the audience, and I’m glad we took it to the big screen,” Kiran said. Instead of releasing the film directly on OTT platforms, they prefer to debut it in cinema.

The film was directed by Kiran Rao and starred Nitanshi Goel, Pratibha Ranta, Sparsh Shrivastava, Chhaya Kadam, and Ravi Kishan. It was the story of two brides who accidentally get exchanged during a train journey.
