Boney Kapoor Speaks Out on Maidaan’s Failure: Bollywood is scarcely producing good content these days. But not all good content is getting commercial success and the recent release 'Maidaan' is a big example. Starring Ajay Devgn as the main lead, this movie is a biopic of Syed Abdul Rahim who is the legendary Indian football coach.
Through the film, viewers embark on a journey to witness how Devgn's character, the coach, made significant strides in Indian football history, leaving a memorable mark even six decades later in the world's most beloved sport. Despite earning praise from the critics, the film earned less than Rs 70 crore at the box office.
“Naturally, I was upset. I was very upset for a few days but then you’ve got to move on,” Boney Kapoor confided. He acknowledged the frustrations that come with the unpredictability of the film industry but also offered a perspective on how even legendary filmmakers like Raj Kapoor, known for his numerous hits and blockbusters, faced their flops.

“Raj Kapoor was the most prolific filmmaker. He made several hits and blockbusters. But he too had films that didn’t meet his expectations,” Kapoor added.
Kapoor’s shock was compounded by the high praise the film received before its release. “Maidaan was a shocker because before the film was released, everybody was very, very vociferous in praising the film. We had several screenings for the people of the film industry, and everybody used to be amazed and stunned by the film,” Kapoor explained.
He said, "The subject we chose was fantastic, and the actor (Ajay Devgn) was superb, but somehow we didn't recognize the demands of the audience. The audiences today want all front-footed action films like RRR, Jawan, and Pathaan."

In a conversation with Bollywood Hungama, Boney expressed his happiness over 'Shaitaan' releasing in theaters after five years and said that we were in the midst of a crisis that the entire world was facing.
However, Boney Kapoor also agreed that there is no formulae for a hit movie. Wondering the reason behind Maidaan’s box office debacle, the film producer told us, “Somehow it didn’t draw enough crowd to the theatres. And I failed to wonder why it didn’t. Maybe we lacked some kind of promotional activity or probably it was not pitched rightly. Probably they thought that the film had come and gone because we were making it for four years. They didn’t realise we were stuck for 3 years because of COVID."
“All in all, I remain proud of that film and I will remain proud of that film concluded.
