Yasin Malik to be Punished today: NIA seeks execution for Terror funding convict Malik; Security tightened across Srinagar
NIA seeks death penalty for Yasin Malik, 'will not beg for anything, retire from politics if my role in terror activity proven', says Malik on the quantum of sentence
The sentence of the separatist leader Yasin Malik, who was convicted in the NIA court in the Terror funding case, is about to be announced. The matter was debated in Delhi's Patiala House Court on Wednesday as to how much punishment Malik would get. In this case, the NIA has demanded capital punishment for Yasin. The court will give its decision after 3:30 pm. During the hearing on May 19, Yasin confessed to his crime. Some parts of Srinagar have been cordoned off ahead of the verdict.
Yasin, who reached the court before the verdict on Wednesday, said that if I have been involved in any terrorist activity or violence for 28 years and intelligence agencies prove it, then I will also retire from politics. I will accept the hanging. I have worked with seven prime ministers. I will not ask for anything for myself. I leave my fate to be decided by the court.
NIA Justice Praveen Singh said that the analysis shows that the statements and evidence of the witnesses have proved the links of almost all the accused with each other and Pakistani funding. According to reports, most shops in Maisuma and adjoining areas, including some in Lal Chowk, remained closed. Markets in some areas of the old city also remained closed, although transport remained normal. Security forces have been deployed in large numbers in the city to maintain law and order.
