Xi Jinping Reacts to Donald Trump’s 145% Tariffs on China: ‘Unilateral Bullying Won’t Be Tolerated’
Xi Jinping called for the EU not to yield to bullying during a meeting with Spanish PM Sanchez and made an argument for cooperation despite trade tensions.

Xi Jinping Reacts to Donald Trump’s 145% Tariffs on China: Chinese President Xi Jinping on Friday urged the European Union to join Beijing in resisting "unilateral bullying", state media Xinhua reported. The remarks were made by the Chinese president in the context of the ongoing trade war with the United States in which President Donald Trump imposed tariffs of 145% on Chinese goods.
Xi's comments were made during his meeting with the Prime Minister of Spain, Pedro Sanchez, in Beijing.
"China and Europe should fulfil their international responsibilities... and jointly resist unilateral bullying practices," Xi said, according to AFP.
The Chinese president stressed that this would not only "safeguard their own legitimate rights and interests, but also... safeguard international fairness and justice."
Sanchez resourcefully added also that trade disputes would not create an impediment to cooperation between the two blocs- Europe and China.
“Both Spain and Europe have a significant trade deficit with China that we must work to rectify,” he said, according to AFP.
“…We must not let trade tensions stand in the way of the potential growth of the relationship between China and Spain and between China and the EU.”
This is Sanchez's third visit to China in just over two years.
Donald Trump's tariff on China
Donald Trump hurled a charge up to the fiery trade war with China after he hiked the tariff on imports from China to 145%.
Trump has raised the tariffs on Chinese products five times since he took office in January.
The initial two hikes, which were both 10%, were replied to by what analysts described as a measured response from China that left the door open for talks. However, Trump soon declared another 34% duty on Chinese goods last week-and tariff arrangements for other countries in his "Liberation Day" turned into a 34% tariff on imports from the US.
Then Trump hiked the tariff on Chinese goods by 50%, saying negotiations were non-existent, and totalled US tariffs at 104%.
Then, China raised the tariff on American products by the same amount (50%), bringing the total rate to 84%. Then Trump upped the American tariff to 125%.
Later, the White House clarified that the tariffs on China also include a 20% levy put into place earlier this year over Beijing's alleged role in fentanyl trafficking.
