World Kindness Day 2020: Has Covid-19 made the world kinder?

Every year on November 13 the world celebrates World Kindness Day. It was started in 1998 as a part of the World Kindness Movement which some Non-Government Organisations from various countries stared in collaboration with each other.

Though a lot of people might disagree in view of the rising job losses leading to mental distress. reports and research done by independent organisations suggest that pandemic Covid-19 has turned people kinder than ever.

As Covid-19 continues to disrupt normal life, Bengaluru-based GiveIndia recently conducted a study to find out if people’s psyche in metros and smaller cities have shifted towards more donation.

The survey reveals that individual philanthropy has gone up and there is a possibility that people’s belief in donating more than earlier will grow stronger in times to come.

It gathered the view of about 450 people and 85% of them said that they would donate more while 74% said that they would prefer to donate for local communities.

Another research by thortful.com presents a similar result and shows that people’s attitudes towards kindness have gone up since Covid -19 hit the World.

Instead of a conducting any survey like GiveIndia, Thortful studies search behaviour of people for words like kindness and arrived at a conclusion that average monthly search for ‘acts of kindness’ is 4400 in 2020 as compared to 2900 in 2019.

This suggests that people searched more for kind activities in 2020 and it gives an idea of their behaviour and thought process during the pandemic.

Many sociologists also agree that pandemic has motivated people to think more about giving back to society as Covid-19 has impacted each and every life across the globe.
