World IVF Day 2024: Debunking Myths and Facts About In Vitro Fertilization (IVF)

25th July is popularly celebrated as World Embryologist Day

World IVF Day 2024: In vitro fertilisation (IVF) has assisted over five million children in being born, but the method is often suffering from many common myths. This concept has resulted in severe social stigma, and myths are part of the social stigma, hence, removing these myths will be an important step.

25th July is popularly celebrated as World Embryologist Day, each year as on this day the very first IVF baby was born, Louise Brown. In the vast field of reproductive medicine, this is the big day for all the health care professionals. So, it's an appropriate time to have a look at how the process works.

“During the IVF process, an infertility specialist retrieves mature eggs from a person’s ovaries, and then an embryologist fertilizes those eggs with carefully prepared sperm in a lab. After fertilisation, the fertilized egg, known as the embryo, is transferred into the uterus in order to achieve pregnancy,” as explained by Dr Sreeja Rani, Sr. Consultant, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Kinder Women’s Hospital and Fertility Centre, Bangalore.

Myth- It's a woman’s fault as she is infertile

Truth- Being infertile is not a choice or any woman's or man’s fault. Infertility is a health issue in males or females or maybe in both.

Myth- IVF is a treatment for the rich and famous

Truth- a multistep procedure is expensive but there are also less expensive procedures available compared to various other surgical treatments. Cost depends on the number of IVF cycles, as it varies for each couple.

Myth-IVF Guarantees Pregnancy

Truth- It does not guarantee pregnancy but (IVF) is an extremely effective fertility treatment. IVF success rate of IVF depends on factors such as age, not being able to conceive, and the quality of embryos. IVF requires multiple attempts for some couples to achieve a successful pregnancy.

Myth: Babies born through IVF have health and developmental issues

Truth- there is no proof that IVF has increased rates of developmental problems or any kind of physical issues.

Myth-IVF always results in twins or multiples

Truth- Due to the transfer of more than one embryo, the chance of having multiple is higher with IVF. Now on, single embryo transfers are now more common.
