Women Judge's Day Ceremony celebrated for the first time in Supreme Court

Chief Justice (CJI) NV Ramana has suggested reservation of girls in legal education to increase the number of women judges in the judiciary. She said that International Women's Judges Day is of great importance for raising awareness and political will.

He emphasizing the need to promote and include women in the judiciary, Justice Ramana said that he strongly proposes reservation for girls in legal education to enrich the talent pool.

The data shows that the appointment of women judicial officers at the district level has yielded encouraging results. The CJI also said that women should be given priority while appointing panel advocates. Justice Ramana said this at the International Women Judge Day celebrations held for the first time in the Supreme Court on 10 March.

The Chief Justice said that at present there are four women judges in the Supreme Court. This is the highest number ever. In the near future we will also see the first woman Chief Justice. But we are still far from ensuring 50 per cent representation of women in the judiciary. The legal profession is still male dominated.
