Will the Centre and the Farmers resolve the differences in the 9th rounds of farm talks?

The farmers’ associations and the Centre will today sit once again to sort out their differences on the three farm laws. This is the 9th time the two sides are going to meet to resolve the contentious issues that emerged due to the enactment of the three agriculture laws.

While the government has refused to bow to the farmers, the latter is adamant not to go by the government’s offer.

According to the farmers, these laws are against their interest and they will leave them at the mercy of the big corporates.

The three farm laws do away with restrictions on the farm trade. They also remove any restriction on the stockpiling of agricultural produces. They also allow contract farming.

The government has claimed that these are progressive reforms that will increase the farmers' income in the coming few years.

The matter is also under litigation in the Supreme Court and in the previous hearing the court proposed a committee to mediate between the government and the farmers, however, farmers decided to boycott the committee.

They have alleged that committee members are pro-farm laws people as they have given statements in favour of three laws. The court has also temporarily put the law on hold.

The court hearing hasn’t impressed the farmers as they are not happy with the committee members. They say that the four committee members are pro-government people who will not think about farmers’ interests.

It seems that the 9th round of talks might not give any fruitful outcome considering the two parties are stuck to their previous stand.
