Will space cooperation between the US and Russia get into trouble after new sanctions?

Dmitry Rogozin, who is the Director-General of Russian space agency Roscosmos, has expressed serious concern about the consequence of harsh sanctions that the USA has imposed on Russia. He said that these sanctions can destroy the cooperation between two countries on International Space Station (ISS).

The International Space Station (ISS) is a modular space station (habitable artificial satellite) in low Earth orbit. This project has collaborative efforts of five participating space agencies: NASA (United States), Roscosmos (Russia), JAXA (Japan), ESA (Europe), and CSA (Canada).

Rogozin, in two tweets, informed that the lack of cooperation might let the project go uncontrolled and the satellite might fall on the US or Europe.

“If you block cooperation with us, who will save the ISS from an uncontrolled deorbit and fall into the United States or Europe?" Rogozin tweeted.

He added, “There is also the option of dropping a 500-tonne structure to India or China. Do you want to threaten them with such a prospect? The ISS does not fly over Russia, so all the risks are yours. Are you ready for them?"

However, the US Space agency, NASA, dismissed any such possibilities. In a statement released to the press, it said, “NASA continues working with all our international partners, including the State Space Corporation Roscosmos, for the ongoing safe operations of the International Space Station. The new export control measures will continue to allow US-Russia civil space cooperation. No changes are planned to the agency's support for ongoing in orbit and ground station operations.”
