The average growth in annual agricultural income between 2002-03 and 2012-13 was about 20%, which fell to around 12% between 2012-13 and 2018-19. Farmer suicide statistics are an important indicator of the condition of farmers and agriculture in India. According to the National Crime Records Bureau report which came in 2021, an increase in farmer suicides has been registered in 2020 as compared to 2019. Along with this, a huge 18% increase was also seen in the suicides of agricultural workers who have been excluded from schemes like PM Kisan or Rythu Bandhu.
Farmer suicide statistics are a mirror to these much publicized schemes and highlight the fact that small and marginal farmers are killing themselves due to their falling income and rising debt burden.
