Rekha first drew attention for her sindoor during Rishi Kapoor and Neetu Kapoor’s wedding in 1980. She was dressed in traditional attire and surprised other guests including big stars like Amitabh Bachchan and Jaya Bachchan by wearing the bright red sindoor in her parting.

At that time she said she was wearing it for a film shoot and had forgotten to remove it. But that was the start of a long association between Rekha and sindoor.

The then President of India Neelam Sanjiva Reddy who was giving her the National Award asked Rekha, “Why do you have sindoor in your maang?” Rekha replied, “In the city I come from, it’s fashionable to wear sindoor.”

Rekha was spotted with sindoor even after she married Mukesh Aggarwal in 1990. But after his death, she continued to wear sindoor. In 2008, speaking with Hindustan Times, Rekha spoke about it again. “I don’t care about what people say. By the way I think it looks good on me.. sindoor suits me,” she said about people’s attention on her sindoor.
