Watery Eyes in Babies: Causes from Common Cold to Conjunctivitis Explained

Watery Eyes in Babies: During the monsoon season eye diseases and allergies are uncontrollable. Kids catch these types of diseases very quickly. The symptoms of watery eyes can be serious eye conditions.

In an interview, Dr. Nidhi Jyoti Shetty, Consultant Ophthalmologist, Dr Agarwals Eye Hospital, Bhandup with Lifestyle said, “When your baby experiences watery eyes, it can be concerning and often prompts parents to seek effective solutions promptly. Understanding the potential causes behind this symptom is essential for providing appropriate care and ensuring your baby's comfort and eye health.”

Dr. Nidhi Jyoti Shetty added. “If your baby's watery eyes persist or are accompanied by other symptoms such as fever, irritability, or unusual eye discharge, it's important to consult a paediatrician promptly for a proper diagnosis and appropriate treatment plan.

Common cold:

Watery eyes can be caused by viral infections like cold in babies. It can be reduced by treating the underlying cold symptoms and can help reduce the watery eyes as the cold resolves.

Environmental factors:

Temporary watery eyes can be caused by smoke and dust. Parents should ensure to create a clean and smoke-free environment for the baby which can help to reduce these symptoms.

Conjunctivitis (pink eye):

It is a common condition that is usually caused by viruses or bacteria. Redness, swelling, and a sticky discharge are the symptoms that can be caused. Antibiotic eye drops or ointment can treat conjunctivitis; medicine should be prescribed by the paediatrician.

Nasal issues:

Nasal polyps, cysts, or tumours kind of conditions can obstruct the nasal passages, which leads to excessive tearing and watery eyes. People should consult a specialist in ear, nose, and throat (ENT) to address these issues.

Exposure to allergens:

When infants are exposed to common allergens like pollen, pet dander, or dust mites, it also causes watery eyes in infants.

Narrow or blocked tear duct:

Underdeveloped tear ducts, which most of the babies suffer from and ear ducts may not be fully open until several months after birth. Blocked tear ducts can be opened by gentle massage between the eye and nose.
