On Sunday, a video of a Hyundai Venue vehicle falling into a caved-in area of a parking lot on the grounds of a Ghatkopar housing complex went viral.
The event, which lasted less than a minute, was shot by the car's owner, a 67-year-old doctor. The parking lot was built over an ancient well in Ramnivas' building, according to police.
Authorities began draining water out of the collapsed area of the parking area around nightfall in order to find the car. Around 9 p.m., traffic police officers assisted by BMC personnel were able to remove the car from the scene.
“We emptied the water from the well using pumps, and once we located the car, we raised it with the help of a crane,” an officer explained.
“My son uses the car for commuting to work,” said Dr Kiran Doshi, the owner of the car.
Dr Doshi's son Tapan was at home since it was the weekend. Mahadev Shigwan, who washes the cars of Ramnivas building tenants, saw that a piece of the concrete courtyard was sinking in at 8.30 a.m.
“After he raised the alarm, I raced to the scene and observed the automobile falling into the well. Then I made the video,” Doshi explained.
According to the locals, the structure was built more than 80 years ago, with the concrete component built roughly 40 years ago. It was constructed atop a well that gives water to the Ramnivas building's inhabitants.
“Half of the well was covered with concrete, while the other half remained uncovered. Everyone parks their vehicles there, and it's the first time a section of it has caved in,” Doshi explained.
“We believe the concrete structure crumbled over time and heavy rains caused the incident,” stated Senior Police Inspector Nagraj Manjre of the Ghatkopar traffic division.
In a statement, the BMC said the event had nothing to do with the local body because it occurred on the property of a private housing society.
