Voting continues in the Vice Presidential election, PM Modi casts his vote, former PM Manmohan Singh reached the wheel chair to vote

Voting is being held today for the election of the new Vice President of the country. Many ministers, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, have voted in the voting being held in the Parliament House. Former Prime Minister and senior Congress leader Manmohan Singh also voted on a wheel chair. The contest in this election is between the NDA candidate Jagdeep Dhankhar and the joint opposition candidate Margaret Alva. 80-year-old Alva is a senior Congress leader and she has also served as the Governor of Rajasthan. At the same time, Dhankhar is 71 years old and he belongs to the influential Jat community of Rajasthan, his background has been socialist.

If we look at the figures, then the position of former West Bengal Governor Dhankhar is looking strong. Differences have also come to the fore in the opposition parties regarding the Vice Presidential election, as TMC has announced to stay away from the voting process. At the same time, TRS, AAP, AIMIM and Jharkhand Mukti Morcha have announced their support for Alva. JDU, YSR Congress, BSP, AIADMK and Shiv Sena have announced their support for Dhankhar.

BJP has its own 394 MPs, 5 nominated MPs and 47 MPs from allies like JDU, AIADMK, LJP. In this way the number of NDA MPs reaches 446. At the same time, the other parties which are supporting Dhankhar are BJD 21, YSRC 31, BSP 11, Akali Dal 2, TDP 4 and Shinde faction Shiv Sena 12. In this way, a total of 527 MPs are seen in favor of Dhankhar.

The Vice-President shall be elected according to the system of proportional representation by means of the single transferable vote and the election shall be by secret ballot. In this, the elector has to mark the preferences against the names of the candidates.
