M. Venkaiah Naidu, the Vice-President of India, has said that North-Eastern states have immense potential and the country should tap it for the development of the area.
Naidu made these observations on the occasion of a book release ‘Oh Mizoram’. The Governor of Mizoram, P S Sreedharan Pillai has written this book which is a collection of English poetries.
Naidu released it virtually and along with other dignitaries, Dr. Jitendra Singh, Minister of State, Ministry of Development of North-Eastern Region, was also present.
The Vice President also highlighted the need to connect the North-Eastern states from other parts of the country through air connectivity.
On average, every year 26 million people visit abroad at various tourist destinations. However, due to the spread of the Covid-19 infection, a majority of them are expected to travel locally.
Naidu is of the view that outbound tourists will prefer to travel locally in the post-Covid-19 era and this provides a good opportunity for North-Eastern states.
These states can promote their tourism for home-bound tourists.
“As a matter-of-fact, the whole of North-Eastern India is endowed with beautiful lakes, lush green hills, crisscrossing rivers and national parks teeming with a wide variety of rare and exotic flora and fauna,” Naidu said.
He added, “With more than 220 ethnic groups and an equal number of dialects, the region presents a mosaic of diverse Indian culture. Apart from these, there are a large number of historical and religious sites that showcase the region’s rich cultural and spiritual heritage.”
