Vaccination is not good enough to contain the pandemic: Health Ministry
Analysing the 183 cases of Omicron in India, the government has found that out of 183, 87 cases were such who were fully vaccinated.
The Health Ministry has said that vaccination alone will not be sufficient to stop the spread of the new variant Omicron.
Analysing the 183 cases of Omicron in India, the government has found that out of 183, 87 cases were such who were fully vaccinated. This shows that the Omicron is able to evade the immune system acquired due to the vaccine.
The government also said that three persons were such that they had even received the booster dose as well despite that they contracted the virus.
Highlighting the high infectivity of Omicron, Dr VK Paul said that it is clear that it is spreading in households because Omicron is highly transmissible compared to Delta.
He added that wearing a mask is very important as once one person brings in the infection from outside will infect others in the household.
He said that Omicron carries a higher risk of infection as it is highly infectious.
“I want to emphasise the need for care. There are upcoming festivals and New Year and the new variant has emerged during this period. Therefore, responsible behaviour such as wearing a mask, hand hygiene and no crowding is the way forward. Unnecessary travel has to be avoided,” Dr Paul said.
He added, “We can’t be in large groups. There needs to be constant vigil. The containment and surveillance strategies remain to be one of the major approaches to control the pandemic. We have the vaccination but that alone is not sufficient to contain the pandemic. There should be special emphasis on contact tracing and perimeter control.”
