UPI Payments to Be Disabled for Some Users from April 1: Is Your Google Pay, PhonePe, or Paytm Affected?
Starting April 1, 2025, NPCI will remove inactive mobile numbers linked to bank accounts from the UPI system as a measure to prevent fraud. Users should update their old mobile numbers, failing which they will face issues while doing UPI transactions.

UPI Payments to Be Disabled for Some Users from April 1: In case you use applications such as Google Pay, PhonePe or Paytm under UPI, then here is something that you should know. Starting from April 1, 2025, such new rules will come, where, mobile numbers are going to be de-linked with bank accounts after a specific duration during which the account was inactive from UPI. Affected users will be those individuals who have bank accounts linked with an old or expired number. If you have created a link between your bank account and the number that is no longer active or is closed, you may have issues with UPI.
This is a step by the National Payments Corporation of India in a bid to reduce cyber fraud and enable more technical efficiency. Most of the time when a mobile number gets deactivated, telecom companies assign it back to another end-user; hence, there is an end-user's fraud risk due to a bank account linked to an old number. Hence, NPCI had ordered banks and all UPI applications to clean up inactive numbers from their systems every week.

Potential Issues With UPI Payments
Mobile number linked to bank account is a prerequisite for UPI transactions. After April 1, it is possible that UPI payment will face issues if the number is inactive for long or not updated after getting a new SIM.
Steps to Avoid Any Issues With Transaction
Make sure to follow these steps, as they can ensure that UPI transactions occur without interruption:
- Validate the mobile number linked to your bank account. If it is old or inactive, update it immediately.
- Contact your telecom provider (Jio, Airtel, Vi, BSNL) to confirm that the number is still registered in your name.
- In case of deactivation and reallocation of the number, visit your bank and associate a different number.
- Update your mobile number and bank details in the UPI app (Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm).

Weekly Data Updates By NPCI
It is NPCI's directive that all banks and UPI applications refresh their list of inactive numbers on a weekly basis. Therefore, your number is likely to get automatically removed from those records held by the bank if left inactive for a long stretch. Hence, keeping your number active and ensuring it is up-to-date is critical.
How To Verify Your Number For UPI
- Log in to your bank's net banking or mobile banking app and check the registered mobile number.
- Identification of the linked number can also be carried out through Google Pay, PhonePe or Paytm.
- If it is inactive, re-link a new number promptly.
