UP CM Yogi Adityanath Promises Fee Waiver, RSS-Run School Refuses Citing ‘No Provision’

On Saturday, an MLA of the ruling alliance party TIPRA Motha, which is a partner with Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Tripura, said that the party was all prepared to withdraw its support to the government and walk alone, as they were not able to control illegal migration and keep its election promise of providing 21 seats to the Tiprasa community as per the [Louis] tripartite Tiprasa Accord signed late last year.

TIPRA Motha MLA and rebel-turned political leader Ranjit Debbarma said they had waited since 1.5 years since the accord was signed without any headway in solving all the problems that the tribals face on the problem of history, rights to land, political rights, economic development, identity, culture, language etc. amicably and decided to withdraw support unless the accord is implemented soon.

But, TIPRA Motha founder and supremo Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma told the journalists that he didnit know about the statements given by Ranjit Debbarma and further stated that he would ask about it. He also told that he had discussed with the chief minister Manik Saha regarding the real disappointment among tribals focusing on the ongoing Tiprasa Accord and that the CM assured him that he will raise the issue with the central government on the proper platform in a manner that amicable solutions can be reached.

Addressing the reporters, MLA Ranjit Debbarma who was the commander of the feared insurgent group All Tripura Tiger Force (ATTF) turned normal and contested in assembly elections two years back rising to win, said: “What’s the benefit of even staying a part of the government? We never left our core demand of Greater Tipraland. Meanwhile, the 125th amendment bill, by-election for vacant seats in the ADC council, ADC village council polls haven’t been held yet (long after they were scheduled to be held). We have waited to see some progress in the Tiprasa Accord but there is no progress till now. We are ready to withdraw support and leave the government. We shall be joining the central government for discussion for one last time this month before deciding.”

He too said that 13 MLAs of the tribal party, its ministers, even BJP MP Kriti Devi Debbarma, younger sister of Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma who joined BJP a little before the 2024 Lok Sabha elections and won the Parliamentary election later were willing to leave their posts.

Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma said, “I have spoken to chief minister Dr. Manik Saha and communicated the genuine frustration among tribals in the villages due to unfulfillment of the Tiprasa Accord. I also discussed the large number of illegal immigrants coming inside Tripura from Bangladesh amidst the prevailing situation there. The CM has assured me that he would take it up at the right platform to ensure proper resolution to the accord.”

When questioned on whether his group would take the tough line in case the agreement fails to materialize in a short run, Pradyot Kishore responded that he would like to place hopes on the CM bearing in mind that the CM had assured him to take the matter up personally with New Delhi.

Ex-chief minister and a Lok Sabha member Biplab Kumar Deb said that he feels Ranjit Debbarma does not represent the right person to announce the policy of TIPRA Motha and going by the fact that, Motha is a partner of ruling alliance with BJP in the state, whatever Pradyot Kishore says, is the policy of the tribal party.

Opposition leader and CPI(M) politburo leader Jitendra Chaudhury however went public in sharp criticism of the ruling alliance and said that the BJP and TIPRA Motha cobbled up the alliance though they had issues to differ on many of the aspects and such a difference was inevitable. He, however, added that he was no longer going to comment on the internal difference of decision in Motha.

In the 12 member cabinet of Tripura, six former Congress MLAs have joined the BJP and they are now ministers with the BJP having total 9 ministers, IPFT having one and TIPRA Motha, one cabinet minister, and one minister of state.
