Union Cabinet Passes Resolution on Emergency Powers Amid Concerns
The cabinet paid tribute to the extraordinary courage and brave resistance of ordinary citizens who took stand against the injustices caused during the Emergency.

On Wednesday, the Union cabinet led by PM Narendra Modi adopted a resolution to remember and honour the "sacrifices of innumerable people who heroically resisted the imposition of the Emergency and its attempt to subvert the spirit of the Indian Constitution."
Observing a two minutes of silence to mark the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the imposition of the Emergency in 1975 by the then Congress government of Indira Gandhi, the cabinet paid respect to the heroic acts of ordinary citizens who heroically resisted the excesses of the Emergency who were stripped of constitutionally guaranteed rights, and endured "unspeakable horrors".
“The year 2025 marks 50 years of the Samvidhan Hatya Diwas - an unforgettable chapter in the history of India where the Constitution was subverted, the Republic and democratic spirit of India was attacked, federalism was undermined, and fundamental rights, human liberty and dignity were suspended,” the resolution said.
It added, “The Union Cabinet reaffirmed that the people of India continue to repose unflinching faith in the Indian Constitution and the resilience of the country’s democratic ethos. It is as important for the young as it is for the old to draw inspiration from those who resisted dictatorial tendencies and stood firm to defend our Constitution and its democratic fabric.”
Referring to India as the 'Mother of Democracy', the resolution concluded that the people of India serve as an example of "preserving, protecting and safeguarding constitutional values."

Earlier that day Union health minister and Bharatiya Janata Party president, JP Nadda accused the Congress of continuing with a dictatorial mindset that caused the Emergency to take place.
Nadda said that the Congress is simply not able to reconcile with the fact that someone from a humble background, like Narendra Modi, is the Prime Minister of the country.
Inreating a jibe at Congress MP and opposition leader in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, who has been accusing the Union government of violating the Constitution, Nadda said opposition party has not even told the people they have no apology for imposing Emergency for 21 months.
Nadda said the law and order situation in Congress-ruled mids countries were similar to Emergency as there were suppression of dissent, religious appeasement and arrogance of power.
