UIDAI gets powers to act against Aadhaar violations, imposing fines of up to Rs 1 crore
The government has notified the rules which enable India’s Unique Identification Authority to appoint arbitration officers to act against violators of the Aadhaar Act and impose penalties of up to Rs 1 crore, almost two years after the legislation was passed. The government informed the UIDAI Rules, 2021 on 2nd November under which UIDAI may file a complaint against an entity in the Aadhaar ecosystem for non-compliance with the law or UIDAI directives and to give the information requested by UIDAI.
UIDAI-appointed officials will make sure such matters and may impose penalties of up to Rs 1 crore on such entities. The Dispute Resolution Tribunal and the Communications Appeals Tribunal shall be the authority to appeal against the decisions of the ruling officer. The new rules which were notified on 2nd November stated that a class officer shall not be below the rank of Joint Secretary to the Government of India, have work experience of 10 years or more, and have managerial knowledge in any of the disciplines of Law, Management, Information Technology or Commerce with experience of not less than 3 years in this field.
