Two BSF personnel involved in UN peacekeeping mission in Congo died during violent protests

Two BSF personnel involved in UN peacekeeping mission in Congo died during violent protests

Two Border Security Force (BSF) personnel deployed in the Congo under the United Nations Peacekeeping Mission were killed during violent protests on Tuesday. A spokesman of the Border Security Force has given this information. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar said that he is deeply saddened at the loss of two brave Indian peacekeepers. He said the perpetrators of the "outrageous attacks" should be held accountable and brought to justice. The minister expressed condolences to the bereaved families. Both soldiers were part of the United Nations peacekeeping mission in the Congo. At least five people were killed and about 50 others injured on the second day of protests against the UN mission in the eastern city of Goma, according to international media.

A Border Security Force spokesman said, "On July 26, two BSF personnel, who were part of a UN peacekeeping force stationed in Butembo, Congo, succumbed to injuries sustained during a violent armed protest." Officials said that two platoons of 70-74 BSF personnel were stationed in the area, both the soldiers were part of the MONUSCO - United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in DR Congo. At least five people were killed and about 50 others injured on the second day of demonstrations in the Congo's eastern city of Goma against the UN mission in the country, according to international media.

He said locals had called for demonstrations and agitations against Monusco throughout the Congo and that the situation in Goma (about 350 km south of Beni and a large Monusco base) had turned violent and protesters looted UN property. and set on fire. Beni and Butembo (two BSF platoons deployed each) were on high alert. Monday passed peacefully. However, the situation in Butembo turned violent on Tuesday. The camp of Morocco Rapid Deployment BN, where BSF platoons are stationed, was surrounded by protesters.
