Trump Warns India May Face 20–25% Tariff Ahead of Aug 1 Deadline: President Donald Trump announced Wednesday that tariffs will be imposed on goods coming into the US, starting on Friday, originating in India at 25 percent, signifying that negotiations on a bigger deal have been unable to be reached before his Aug. 1 deadline that he had set.
“India has been a good friend, but India has charged basically more tariffs than almost any other country," Trump said via a post on Truth Social.

"ALL THINGS NOT GOOD! INDIA WILL THEREFORE BE PAYING A TARIFF OF 25%, PLUS A PENALTY FOR THE ABOVE, STARTING ON AUGUST FIRST," Trump posted.
Another accusation made by Trump against India was that it purchases its military weaponry through Russia.
"THE AUGUST FIRST DEADLINE IS THE AUGUST FIRST DEADLINE — IT STANDS STRONG, AND WILL NOT BE EXTENDED. A BIG DAY FOR AMERICA!!!" Trump said.
Trump also reiterated that he would not provide relief to Friday deadlines when tariffs are to come into effect to the rates specified in agreements or letters Trump has written to leaders of countries.
Trump validated on Monday that 15 percent is now the tariff minimum of the nations, whose tariffs he has been dictating to leaders on the condition that trade deals are non existent.

In the meantime, the US and China brought their most recent tariff and trade meeting to a close in Sweden on Tuesday with each side saying development was made yet not reporting any instant information of another tariff reprieve. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent claimed that President Trump would have the last word on whether the trade truce between the two largest markets in the world gets prolonged.
The countries had entered the third round of talks this week, and the countries have progressively cooled down the trade tensions since Trump announced gargantuan tariffs in April, and the Chinese responded to it. Those tariffs were suspended by the countries but given a window of 90 days time which ends on Aug. 12. According to Bessent, there is a possibility of another 90 day extension.
Also, the US and EU are in a sprint to seal the final points of their big new trade agreement by Friday.
According to top EU critics, it is a hasty remedy. German political leader Friedrich Merz was dissatisfied with the result and France leader Bayrou described the submissiveness of the EU as a black day. The treaty has a 15 percent baseline tariff rate on majority of the EU products imported to the US. Trump termed the deal as the largest one of them all.
