Trump Threatens to Cut Federal Funding for Colleges Allowing ‘Illegal’ Protests

Trump Threatens to Cut Federal Funding for Colleges: U.S. President Donald Trump announced Tuesday that his administration would withdraw all federal funding from any colleges, schools, or universities that endorse "illegal protests."

He warned that depending on the severity of their actions, agitators could either face jail time or deportation, while American students could find themselves expelled or arrested.

“All Federal Funding will STOP for any College, School, or University that allows illegal protests. Agitators will be imprisoned/or permanently sent back to the country from which they came. American students will be permanently expelled or, depending on on the crime, arrested. NO MASKS! Thank you for your attention to this matter,” Trump wrote on his Truth Social account.

The Republican has earlier warned of cutting federal funds to U.S. colleges, schools, and universities over teachings regarding gender and race, allowing transgender athletes to participate in girls' sports, or enforcing Covid-19 vaccine mandates.

Trump promised sweeping changes in the U.S. education system, including abolishing the Department of Education and granting full control over the curriculum to states.

After student protests against Israel's war in Gaza last year, attracted accusations of anti-Semitism, the U.S. government announced it was reviewing over $50 million in contracts with Columbia University in New York for alleged failure to protect Jewish students.

Last year, the prestigious Ivy League was engulfed in controversy.

The protests led to intense scrutiny from Congress onto higher education leaders to determine whether adequate measures were in place to protect Jewish students from accusations of anti-Semitism.

Last month, according to education secretary Linda McMahon, Trump set up a task force to look into what his administration was calling growing anti-Semitism in schools. The task force will review Columbia's federal grants.

She stated that institutions receiving federal funds have a duty to protect all students. She argues that Columbia's "apparent failure to uphold their end of this basic agreement" raises serious questions about their ability to continue their relationship with the U.S. government.
