The budget allocation of many sectors has also been reduced.
In the Olympic year, there was a competition to take credit for winning medals in sports, but the government reduced the sports budget. In the year 2020, the government had announced a sports budget of Rs 2827 crore. Later the Tokyo Olympics and domestic tournaments were postponed due to the Corona epidemic and the government reduced the budget to 1878 crores. After this, a sports budget of Rs 2596 crore was announced in the year 2021, which was about Rs 231 crore less than the original budget of last year.
Prime Minister Modi has always emphasized on research related to health, but in the last budget the expenditure on healthcare research was also reduced. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman allocated Rs 2663 crore to the Department of Health Research for 2021. This is 34.4% less than the revised estimate of 4062 crores for the financial year 2020-21. Compared to the world's largest economy, India spends very little of its GDP in the healthcare sector. India currently spends 1.6% of GDP.
Despite culture having a special place in the government's agenda, the budget of the Ministry of Culture was reduced. This stalled the maintenance work of the historic buildings. 2688 crores were allocated for the Ministry of Culture (MoC) in the Union Budget 2021, which was 461 crores less than the previous year.
