Tamannaah Bhatia on Hindi vs South Indian Cinema: The actress Tamannaah Bhatia who has worked in Tamil, Telugu and Hindi movies recently gave her view on the one basic reality of South Indian cinema, and why emotions will continue to be the drive behind any movie.
“In the South, the stories are very rooted. As in, it is well contained within their geographical area. That is why their content is translating globally,” shared Tamannaah, who manages to concisely distil the diversity of South Indian cinema.
Talking to Indian Express, Tamannaah revealed that the filmmakers just explore the basic emotions inherent in drama or a revenge story which is based on relationships.

Instead of perceiving people as different groups of individuals that might be of interest to them they are not even trying to target different groups. In addition, because the feeling sort is so extreme, viewers feel it despite the fact that they may be watching a dubbed movie rather than a subtitled original. It is not important to know the exact words, the focus is on the expression and the feeling that is behind this or that word.
Comparing with the Hindi films, Tamannaah has an opinion to say that, of course, the work has been done there has inspired her but one needs to look beyond.
“When you create work that is catered to work for different audiences, and everybody’s consumption, khichdi ban jaati hai (it becomes a hotchpotch of a film). Take, for instance, Laapataa Ladies. It was a village story, but managed to resonate with the urban audience, right? So, it is important to understand that what really matters is not the people and their setting, but the emotions,” said the actress.

In the recent years, Tamannaah has acted in some blockbusters and film that forms part of an era. She appeared in the ‘Baahubali’ series, had a guest appearance in ‘Jailer’, sarakattu in movies such as ‘Stree 2’ and ‘KGF’. “I’ve had the good fortune to have been part of these commercial successes. I am not complaining at all,” said Tamannaah while taking time to clarify that the audience's main goal is to be entertained, even if the film tackles a rather profound subject.
This was said by Tamannaah while taking time to explain that the purpose of the audience is to be entertained, although the movie examines a rather philosophical theme.
She further added, “What Amar Kaushik has done intelligently in Stree 2 is that he is using a commercially viable genre like horror comedy to say something really profound. No one wants to listen to profound conversations if the communication isn’t interesting.”
Tamannaah also used the opportunity to speak about how difficult it is to enter the sphere of horrors and comedy that she tried twice in 2024.
“Earlier this year, my Tamil film, Aranmanai 4 made more than Rs 100 crores. It was a female-led film with Raashi Khanna starring alongside me. The glory was all ours. Of course, films fronted by men do make a lot of money in the South, but it is only a handful of films lead by women that make so much money. More than anything, it is testament to the fact that when you make stories about what is happening in every street and village, that film will run,” shared Tamannaah.
